Yesterday, my Western Digital MyBook Essentials 500GB External Drive decided to kick the bucket. There goes most of my anime, all of my manga, vacation photos and videos, most of my games (TouHou!!!!), pirated loot, program source code, Prism Ark ASS files, RAWs, Encodes, and lots of other stuff. And the Kyoukai no Rinne Downloader source code too…

Not that that’s a problem. Since it’s written for PHP which is an interpreter language, I can just go to MediaFire, download r2 and get the source code back!

Now while I was in Ubuntu trying to fix the HDD, I decided to try getting the downloader to run in Linux. It’s not as easy as in Windows but it’s not difficult. I managed to get it to work by installing 2 packages and making a .sh file. Here’s a screenshot:

I’m not releasing anything yet until I’m sure that it runs with no problems. Those who are willing to try it anyway can contact me. A Google search for my nickname should get you more than enough info on contacting me. IRC is preferred though.

I also spotted a little bug where if the user already has PHP installed on their system, the program might not work correctly. Since I highly doubt that any of you would have PHP installed, it doesn’t warrant a new release just to fix that. If there ARE people who are affected by this, contact me then.

Almost forgot to write this. Since all my manga are gone, that includes Kyoukai no Rinne chapter that have been taken down by Viz. If there is anyone who is willing to send me the chapters, please contact me.

Can someone also make download links to all the prism ark episodes, because I can’t find them anywhere and the torrents are all dead now.

You should try a version of the UNIX dd utility on that drive if it still spins up, use it to copy it to another drive of equal or greater size. Just don’t screw up the syntax though or you will make things worse. Since it in an external unit I would also recommend disassembling the external drive so you could hook it up inside your computer, you may be lucky and just have a bad enclosure. There are several guides on how to do it just double check the revision first, there are at least 2 different based on the presence of a hidden outer screw.
